Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of places should I add to RoadTripJourney (RTJ)?

RoadTripJourney is about getting out in the world and exploring. We're built for people who like to experience the world and all the cool and interesting places it has to offer. We feel the best places are those that have pictures with them, what better way to experience some where than with pictures? But, in general, a place on RoadTripJourney should be....

  • Interesting to you, and some where you enjoyed visiting or would like to visit.
  • Include a description of the place.
  • Examples include: Great places to eat at (burger joints, diners, etc), Places to See (Worlds largest ball of Yarn, Grand Canyon, etc), Places to Stay (Motels, Hotels, etc)
In the end, it's about what's interesting to you - because it will probably be interesting to others as well.

How do I post a new destination?

We try to make things simple. Look at the top of the page and click on the "Add Destination" link.

Do I have to sign in or create an account?

You can view destinations and add destinations, as well as edit other destinations as an anonymous user. But, there are many features you miss out on by not registering such as gaining reputation points, commenting on other places, earning travel patches, and voting. Why put it off? It's easy to register.

What is "Road Rep" (reputation)?

Road Rep is a point system for measuring, roughly, how much the RTJ community trusts you. Road Rep is earned by convincing other road trippers that you are well traveled and you know what you are talking about! The more Road Rep you earn, the more privileges you gain on the site. Basic use of the site such as adding new destinations, suggesting edits to existing places, using the road trip planner, etc do not require any Road Rep.

The main way to earn Road Rep is by adding new destinations to RTJ. When you add a new destination to RTJ, fellow travelers will vote on your destination - giving you more votes for a really cool destination, or less votes for a not so cool one. Those votes will cause you to gain (or, in some rare cases, lose) Road Rep points. Specifically:

A Place You Added is Voted Up+ 5 points (places with pics get voted up more)
A Place You Added is Voted Down- 2 points (-1 pts to Voter)

A maximum of 10 votes can be cast per user per day. You can earn a maximum of 50 Road Rep points per day.

The other way to gain reputation is by suggesting edits to existing places/destinations on RTJ. Each edit will be reviewed by fellow travelers, and if it is accepted, you will earn +2 Road Rep points. You can only earn a maximum of +1000 total Road Rep points through suggested edits.

So, you're probably wondering what all these Road Rep points can be used for... if you earn enough of them, you get additional privileges on RTJ, plus the opportunity to win prizes!

15 Vote Up for A Destination
15 Flag for Moderator Attention
125 Vote a Destination Down
500 Retag a destination
1000 Show the up and down vote counts for each destination.
2000 Edit places, Approve or Reject Suggested Edits to Places.
15000 Vote to delete negatively voted places.

Other people can edit a destination I added?

If you see a place that needs improvement, click edit and help us make it better. We especially appreciate people who add pictures to a place.

All edits are reviewed, you can always see how a place was edit'ed by viewing the public edit history for a destination.

Places change, people add different perspectives, etc RoadTripJourney is about letting the community of travelers drive what's most important to them.

Can I use RTJ to plan my road trip?

Absolutely! You can plan your road trip or any kind of travel that you plan on doing.

Soon, it will be even easier with our easy to use Road Trip Planner.
