Place Title:

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

Place Type:

Destination to See

Description:

We have been meaning to visit this Park for many years and have driven past it several times, so this last September we added it to our route and spent a couple days here. There is fabulous Scenery here without the crowds you find at the Grand Canyon and other parks. The campground is really nice - quiet and peaceful with many deer and birds all around. The geography is unique with veins of quartz running through the cliffs....really beautiful during different times of the day. Make sure you take an evening to see the sunset from Sunset point.....the view is spectacular! You really need to spend a day or two here in order to see much of what this park offers. We stayed on the South rim. Our Daughter has been to the North rim and after comparing pictures, the South rim offers more sheer beauty. The website for the Park is here: park.http://www.nps.gov/blca/index.htm The address is for the NPS headquarters in Gunnison....the park itself doesn't have a street address but you can get to the North or South rim as directed here: Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is located about 250 miles southwest of Denver. South Rim: 15 miles east of Montrose, via U.S. Highway 50 and CO Highway 347 North Rim: 11 miles south of Crawford, via CO Highway 92 and North Rim Road (unpaved) Having been through harrowing experiences with our kids when they were young, you will need to watch little ones carefully here, but they will enjoy much of the park too.
